Gugulethu Sofia Mbatha popular under her stage and screen names Gugu Mbatha Raw. Gugu became famous for her role in the BBC television series of science fiction called Doctor Who. Handler was the child of a salesman and a housewife. Her mother, who was a German immigrant to the United States since 1958, was born in Germany. Handler was diagnosed with breast carcinoma in 1989. Handler is a reform Jew Her father was Jewish. Handler enjoyed a happy and healthy life in a good neighbourhood. At the age of 19 She relocated to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in acting. To help support herself, Handler began to work as an actor. Handler started doing stand-up comedy full-time after she was 21. She realized she has a knack for story telling. Handler made her debut on the Oxygen Network's Girls Behaving Badly which was a reality program with the use of a hidden camera/practical joke. It ran between 2002 and 2005. The handler began to appear on various other programs, including Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler began her career as a journalist on The Tonight Show. Handler made her breakthrough in 2006 when she was named host on E! The show was called Chelsea Handler. The show ran for two seasons. Handler was a part of the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour the next year in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend and HBO broadcast her stand-up comic performance. In 2010, she was tapped to host the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. It was only the second female host of the VMAs following Roseanne Bar.
